What is it that we eat at Carnival in Italy?

Time really flies fast even under this quarantine... 😲

In Greece we are now celebrating Carnival which ends this coming Sunday while in Italy it has already passed for a while. So before Carnival is gone for this year, here too, I thought I'd refresh the memory of my palate with a characteristic dessert that probably dates back to ancient Rome.

Delicious sheets of fried dough covered with powdered sugar with a truly characteristic look and taste 😋

All the pastry shops in Italy have their windows decorated during Carnival period with this sweets which in every region of the country have a different way of being called...

the Romani, we call them "fràppe"!!!

Ingredients:

2 eggs

2 tablespoon of sunflower oil

2 tablespoon of sugar

Grated lemon peel to taste

2 tablespoon of aromatic liqueur (I used Greek "Ouzo")

A pinch of salt

280g of flour approx

Directions:

In a bowl add: the eggs, the sugar, the liqueur, the oil, the grated lemon peel, a pinch of salt

and mix. Add the flour a little at a time kneading with the hands until we obtain a smooth and homogeneous dough.

Roll out the dough with a rolling pin to obtain a thin sheet (approx. 2 mm), sprinkle with flour as we proceed to shape the sheet.

With a wheel, cut the dough into strips, to obtain long rectangles.

Prepare the pan with the oil for frying, the oil is ready when, by pouring a piece of dough, it immediately returns to the surface. Start frying 2-3 chats at a time and turn them to cook on all sides. When they are golden, drain and place them on absorbent paper. Continue to fry all the dough.

Once cooled sprinkle with abundant powdered sugar and enjoy them!

PS

For a lighter version: instead of frying them we can alternatively bake them in the oven but...

honestly? naaahhh ... it is not the same... if you want to sin then do it right!!!😂
